What Leak Detection Includes
If you’ve never experienced hidden water leaks before, you may not even know what to look for. There are a few ways you might discover a hidden leak before it does enough damage to become obvious.
One way is to listen for the sound of running water when you’re not using any. That can not only indicate a leak but also help you narrow down its location. You can also use your home’s water meter as a handy tool for detecting leaks. Just turn off all your faucets and water-dependent appliances. If your water meter continues to tick upward, you likely have a hidden water leak in your home.
Our plumbers can uncover hidden water leaks using several methods. One method used to confirm the presence of a leak is a pressure test. In that test, our plumber would turn off your water supply and pump air into your pipes.
Using an air pressure gauge, they’d then monitor for air pressure losses in your pipes. If air can escape from your pipes, so can water. However, pressure testing rarely indicates the location of a leak. For that, our plumbers may turn to one or more additional methods.
One method commonly used for both hidden leak and slab leak detection is thermal imaging. The logic behind it is simple: the water in a home’s plumbing rarely matches the ambient temperature. In other words, a leak from a cold-water supply line or a drain will be colder than the air temperature. And a leak from a hot water supply line will be much hotter than the surrounding air. Using thermal imaging equipment can often reveal telltale cold or hot spots created by a leak.
Another method we might use to pinpoint a leak’s location is acoustic detection. It involves the use of sensitive audio equipment that can uncover the sounds created by a leak. Typically, even the tiniest leaks make noise.
The problem is that human hearing alone isn’t enough to hear a leak until it grows quite severe. Our detection equipment is many times more sensitive than the human ear. That not only lets us detect the presence of a leak, but also traces the sound to its source.
If we suspect a leak in a drain or sewer line, we may use remote video inspection to uncover it. It involves feeding a borescope camera into your drain line to inspect its inner walls. That allows us to examine parts of your plumbing that might otherwise never be visible.
Additionally, it provides our plumber with a close-up view of the damage that caused the leak. That makes selecting the proper method of pipe leak repair easier. It also reduces the damage to finished walls, ceilings, or floors that’s necessary to perform your pipe leak repair.
Our plumbers may perform a visual inspection of your home’s foundation as part of a slab leak detection appointment. That’s because slab leaks often lead to cracks in a home’s foundation. A skilled plumber can interpret foundation cracks to narrow down a slab leak’s location.
